PETALING JAYA (Sept 6): A supermarket in China’s Sichuan province had to close temporarily shortly after its opening due to a stampede.

Sin Chew Daily reported that the crowd was lured by a special opening sale, along with offers of ang pows.

In the rush for the perks, 16 people were hurt, with one in grave condition.  

The crowd had built up even before the supermarket opened its doors at 7.30am on Wednesday. Upon its opening, the mob charged into the limited space, causing some customers to fall off staircases and get injured.

Several senior citizens were seen lying disoriented, while some appeared unconscious at the foot of a staircase in an aftermath footage.

A supermarket personnel has been remanded by the police to assist in investigations.
