PETALING JAYA (Aug 11): Thieves who have been helping themselves to building equipment at the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) construction sites have been nabbed by the police.

According to a report by The Star today, the group has been operating for more than a year before being arrested.

Maran OCPD deputy superintendent Norzamri Abd Rahman told the daily that raids against the group known as Geng Mamat were conducted at three locations on Aug 5 after receiving a public tip-off.

He said that three men and a woman have been held on suspicion of stealing equipment worth RM30,000 from the ECRL sites.

Norzamri added that the police also seized a Proton Iswara, an air rifle and a pair of handcuffs “believed to have been used by the suspects for impersonation to extort foreign workers”.

A plastic packet with 2.13g of syabu was also found.
