The nomination concentrates on initiatives for the improvement of public spaces and placemaking that demonstrate positive considerations and impacts on the physical and social integration within and between the public spaces and its surrounding urban setting.
“This include consideration on the quality of its public realm, urban design, landscape and streetscape functions, and integration of the project with the surrounding environment which ultimately creates a sense of place to the public,” stated MIP.
The entries and winners were divided into 10 categories to recognise different segments.
Public-led placemaking have seen successes with local councils such as Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ), Majlis Daerah Mersing (MDM), Majlis Perbandaran Sungai Petani, Kedah (MPSPK) and Majlis Bandaraya Kuantan (MBK) taking home the top Diamond awards.
On the private sector side, there were Sime Darby Property and S P Setia taking home honours for community and urban parks.
Taking place before this awards night was the MIP Centre of Excellence, Placemaking Malaysia, organised the Placemaker Week ASEAN (PWA) 2025 from 26 to 30 August, alongside Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ).
The event brought together nearly 300 placemakers from ASEAN and Malaysia, along with 48 speakers from 14 countries who shared their expertise, knowledge, and experiences in co-creating places in their own cities.
The first awards started in 2017 together with ThinkCity with just 59 entries and 14 winners.
“From those early beginnings, Placemaking Malaysia has grown into a strong platform within MIP—building awareness, creating networks, and showing how placemaking delivers social, cultural, environmental, and economic benefits.
“The MyPLACE Awards are a continuation of that journey,” said Mazrina.
“At MIP, placemaking has become one of our most important commitments.
“It began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when our cities were locked down and communities were distanced,” added Mazrina
“Placemaking gave us the opportunity to reimagine how public spaces could adapt, and how planning could respond to people’s needs in meaningful ways,” she explained.
As Malaysia continues its journey towards sustainable urbanisation and climate resilience… placemaking is no longer a luxury. It is a necessity.
“The spaces we create today will define how our cities are lived, loved, and remembered for generations to come,” she said.
