PETALING JAYA (Oct 29): Property developer UEM Sunrise Bhd has appointed Shaharul Farez Hassan as its new managing director and CEO, effective Nov 17.

In a bourse filing on Tuesday, the group said the appointment follows the resignation of Sufian Abdullah as CEO, announced on Dec 4, 2024 and vacated in February.

Shaharul Farez, 55, brings with him three decades of leadership experience spanning corporate management, finance, strategic planning, and operations across diverse industries including real estate, hospitality, automotive, and infrastructure. 

Shaharul has served as CEO of Tradewinds Hotels & Resorts Sdn Bhd and holds directorships in several companies including Hicom Holdings Bhd, Gadek (Malaysia) Bhd, Horsedale Development Bhd, and Media City Development Sdn Bhd.

He previously served as group CEO of Tradewinds Corp Bhd from 2008 to 2015, chief operating officer for properties, concession and corporate planning at DRB-HICOM Bhd from 2018 to 2022, and executive vice-president at Malakoff Corp Bhd.

Shaharul holds a Master of Business Administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Accounting from the University of Bristol.

With his appointment, Hafizuddin Sulaiman, who has been serving as as officer-in-charge, will return to his position as chief financial officer.

At the same time, the developer also announced the appointment of Grace Yap Mei Wan, 58, as an independent director, effective Nov 3. She is a current board member of Bata Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Sungei Bagan Rubber Co (M) Bhd.
