JOHOR BARU (Dec 2): Johor Land Group Sdn Bhd (JLG), the property arm of Johor Corporation, launched a 7,290 acres technology park in Sedenak, Kulai, some 50km to the north of the city centre of Johor Baru and 70km from Singapore.

The Ibrahim Technopolis (IBTEC) aims to be Asia's largest innovation sandbox, anchored by data centres in Sedenak Tech Park (STEP) which are expected to attract global investments in advanced electrical and electronics (E&E), medical technology, and life sciences.

The project is expected to have a gross domestic value (GDV) of RM27 billion, spanning 22 years. IBTEC's STEP has already attracted RM34.5 billion committed investments in data centres.

IBTEC is conceptualised based on the need to grow and advance Johor's industrial complexities, from low value-added to advanced manufacturing, based on research and development, says JLG's group managing director Datuk Akmal Ahmad.

“We will measure IBTEC’s success not only by the investments it attracts, but by how it helps Malaysians and Johoreans move up the value chain — as workers, entrepreneurs and communities,” he said. “That is how we intend to prove the real impact of this ecosystem.”

The key building blocks that will grow IBTEC includes advanced manufacturing and logistics precincts integrated into regional and global supply chains; R&D and innovation clusters connected to universities, technical institutions and corporate research centres; a digital connectivity spine with data-ready infrastructure, smart utilities and systems designed to support artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and autonomous solutions; and an enabling policy environment that can accommodate future sandbox-oriented approaches as regulations evolve.
