- Felda has “clear and strong" rights under the Land (Group Settlement Areas) Act 1960, which mandates the development of group settlement areas, in line with powers granted under the Land Development Act 1956.
KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 2): The Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) and its wholly owned unit, FGV Holdings Bhd, said they take a serious view of the warning notices issued by the Terengganu government over alleged unlawful occupation of plantation land in the state.
In a joint statement, they stressed that the three-day ultimatum to vacate the land, demolish structures and clear crops is too stringent and short in the context of estate management and commercial operations.
The 127 notices, covering Felda and FGV plantation lots in Besut, Setiu, Dungun, Hulu Terengganu, Marang and Kemaman, were issued between Nov 30 and Dec 2.
According to the statement, Felda has “clear and strong" rights under the Land (Group Settlement Areas) Act 1960, which mandates the development of group settlement areas, in line with powers granted under the Land Development Act 1956.
Felda and FGV are currently undertaking a comprehensive review of all related documents—including historical records, land premium payments, ownership status and development conditions—through a detailed land audit and cross-verification with state authorities.
“This review is being conducted carefully to ensure accuracy and completeness. Felda and FGV will act based on official records and verified documentation supported by facts,” the statement said.
Felda and FGV stressed that the warning notices do not affect settlers’ plantation operations or livelihoods in Felda’s Terengganu region.
They said settlers may continue their activities as usual. However, the directives have direct implications for Felda and FGV’s commercial estates, long-term planning and operational continuity, with potential impact on yields and revenue that ultimately affects settler communities.
“Felda and FGV remain optimistic that the matter can be resolved through proper legal processes and cooperation among all relevant government institutions. Our actions will comply with applicable laws while safeguarding workers, settler communities and the overall stability of the national plantation industry,” they added.
