PETALING JAYA (Dec 16): Hannah Yeoh is the new federal territories minister under the Prime Minister’s Department, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in a Cabinet reshuffle broadcast live today.
Yeoh, 46, takes over the federal territories portfolio from Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, who was first appointed health minister after the 15th general election in 2022 before being reassigned to oversee the federal territories in December 2023.
Zaliha’s time in Cabinet was marked by criticism over several policy decisions, stated Malay Mail in its report today.
As federal territories minister, Yeoh will oversee Malaysia’s key urban centres, namely Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan; coordinating development, administration, and policy initiatives across the territories.
Yeoh is a seasoned politician from the Democratic Action Party (DAP), serving as the first female and youngest Speaker of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly from 2013 to 2018. She entered federal politics in 2018 as the Member of Parliament for Segambut, KL, and has built a reputation for her focus on youth engagement, community development, and progressive policies.
When the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition won the 14th general election, she was given her first ministerial duty as deputy minister of women, family, and community development in 2018. Subsequently, she took on the role of youth and sports minister in 2022.
Commenting on the appointment, communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said: “I believe this is a very appropriate appointment for her”, reported Free Malaysia Today (FMT) today.
“I have worked extensively with her before, and she has consistently championed issues affecting the people,” Fahmi was quoted saying.
He also said “one of Yeoh’s key priorities will likely be sustainable development within the federal territories”, reported FMT.
The housing and local government minister, and deputy minister are unchanged, with Nga Kor Ming, and Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu respectively.
Meanwhile, Anwar expressed hope that all those entrusted with responsibilities will work with full dedication and accountability to ensure the wellbeing of the people, and that the interests of the nation will always remain a priority.
“I also extend my appreciation and thanks to the leadership team that served in the previous MADANI Cabinet for their service, contributions, and commitment in advancing the agenda of reform and national development,” he said in his Instagram post today.
