LENGGONG (Dec 20): The Lenggong District Council, in partnership with Think City, has officially launched the Lenggong community centre on Saturday. The community centre (formerly the district chief’s office) has been opened since August and acts as a multipurpose space that could host various programmes such as workshops and training sessions.

The centre is part of the Lenggong Valley Sustainable Community Development Programme (LVSCD), a capacity-building programme, initiated by Think City in 2023 with the support of Yayasan Hasanah, that focuses on strengthening awareness and understanding of Lenggong’s heritage.

Lenggong was recently recognised as a Unesco Global Geopark in September while Lenggong Valley was recognised as a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2012.

During the launching ceremony, Think City managing director Datuk Hamdan Abdul Hameed said, “Through a collaboration between Think City and the Lenggong District Council, this building has been given a new lease of life and restored as a community space for sharing ideas and building initiatives to strengthen the liveability of the Lenggong community.”

He added that the centre will also host Universiti Teknologi Malaysia's (UTM) geopark research satellite laboratory.

“Beyond development activities, the centre will also serve as UTM’s geopark research satellite laboratory. Activities to be carried out will include short courses, training programmes, and knowledge-sharing related to geopark management and conservation.” “

“We hope this centre will become a hub for various community development programmes in the field of entrepreneurship, research and other development-related areas,” said Deputy Home Minister and Member of Parliament for Lenggong Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, adding that he hopes to position Lenggong as an education hub for global geoparks.

During the same event, Think City also announced the four grantees of the Cultural Economy Catalytic Grants (CECGs) to provide financial support for local entrepreneurs. The four grantees are Jejak Warisan, Pemeliharaan Warisan Biologi Lembah Lenggong Melalui Pemerkasaan Komuniti (Pewaris), Cerita-Cerita Pekan Lenggong and Lenggong360.

Jejak Warisan is a community-based activity derived from the training-of-trainers (TOT) implemented together with Arts-Ed, a non-profit organisation providing community-based arts and culture education. Its activities include mapping, storytelling as well as guiding the community members of Lenggong to specific trails in Lenggong.

Meanwhile, Pewaris is an awareness-raising project covering citizen scientist programmes, publications and exhibitions focusing on the fungi ecosystem in Lenggong.

For Cerita-cerita Pekan Lenggong, it will focus on storytelling through various mediums such as photo exhibitions as well as activating a former cultural and social space (old movie theatre) where one can find stories revolving around iconic buildings in Lenggong town at the space.

Lastly, the Lenggong360 provides boat cruises along the riverine in Lenggong and its villages. It will focus on knowledge building for the local community to learn about the riverine and content creation where it covers production of videos and brochures for wider outreach about the riverine.
