KUALA LUMPUR (April 15): Sunway Bhd (KL:SUNWAY) said Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar (pictured) has joined the conglomerate’s board as an independent and non-executive director.

His appointment took effect immediately, according to a bourse filing on Wednesday.

The 62-year-old currently chairs the boards of Cypark Resources Bhd (KL:CYPARK) and IOI Corp Bhd (KL:IOICORP).

Wahid previously served as Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of the Economic Planning Unit (2013–2016) and also chaired the boards of Bursa Malaysia Bhd (KL:BURSA) and Permodalan Nasional Bhd.

The appointment also comes a little over a week after Sunway failed in its takeover bid for IJM Corp Bhd (KL:IJM).

Its cash-share offer closed on April 6, with acceptances amounting to only 33.43% — below the conditional requirement of over a 50% stake.

Shares in Sunway ended eight sen or 1.53% higher at RM5.30, valuing the group at RM36.07 billion.
