KOTA KINABALU (April 16): IHG Hotels & Resorts (IHG) has signed a management agreement for Kimpton Kota Kinabalu, marking the second property for the luxury lifestyle brand in Malaysia.

According to a press statement issued on Wednesday, the 350-key beachfront retreat is being developed in partnership with Pekah Beach Resorts Sdn Bhd and is scheduled to open in 2031.

Located on the Tanjung Aru shoreline, the property will offer direct beach access and views of the South China Sea and Mount Kinabalu. The hotel is designed to feature public spaces and programming that celebrate local Sabah culture, music, and cuisine.

IHG Hotels & Resorts South East Asia and Korea development vice-president Bryan Chan said the group aims to triple its luxury and lifestyle portfolio in Malaysia over the next few years.

"Kimpton Kota Kinabalu marks our second Kimpton property in the country, following the highly anticipated opening of Kimpton Naluria Kuala Lumpur at Tun Razak Exchange just a few months ago," Chan said.

The hotel will feature several dining destinations, including an all-day dining restaurant, a Beach Club, and a specialty dining venue. Other facilities include swimming pools, fitness and wellness centres, and flexible function rooms.

Pekah Beach Resorts director Claire Tan said the property will be the city's first beachfront luxury lifestyle hotel at Tanjung Aru Beach, focusing on authentic social connections and distinctive design.

The Kimpton brand currently operates more than 80 hotels globally, with over 60 in the pipeline. In Southeast Asia, three Kimpton properties are currently operational, with six more set to launch in the coming years, including Kimpton Suntaya Bali Ubud.
