PETALING JAYA (May 12): Nasdaq-listed Equinix, Inc has announced plans to develop KL2, a new purpose-built International Business Exchange data centre in Cyberjaya, Selangor, representing a total investment of over US$190 million (about RM747 million) — bringing the company's cumulative investment in Malaysia to over US$530 million across its four sites, based on previously reported figures.
It said in a statement that KL2 will be located less than 1km from Equinix's existing Cyberjaya facility, KL1, on a 14,300 sq m (153,924 sq ft) plot that Equinix acquired from Cyberview Sdn Bhd in July 2024 for RM23 million, according to a separate Equinix announcement dated July 28, 2024.
Selangor Chief Minister Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari was present at the document exchange ceremony between the two companies.
"This expansion marks an important milestone in our journey to elevate Malaysia's digital economy. KL2 will not only enable businesses to process data closer to the source and deploy distributed AI with agility, but it will also drive high-value job creation and build long-term economic resilience for the nation," said Equinix Malaysia managing director Malaysia Cheam Tat Inn.
The facility marks Equinix's fourth data centre in Malaysia, adding to KL1 and its two Johor sites, JH1 and the upcoming JH2.
When fully built out, KL2 will deliver more than 2,200 cabinets and will be seamlessly integrated into Equinix's global network, interconnected with its Malaysia and Singapore footprint via Equinix Fabric. Equinix said adjacent land has been secured for future expansion, reinforcing Greater Kuala Lumpur's longer-term role as a key interconnection hub in Asean.
The facility is designed to support a mixed customer base ranging from retail enterprises to large-footprint deployments and high-density workloads. A substantial portion of its capacity will support liquid cooling solutions to meet the demands of next-generation distributed AI and high-performance computing.
KL2 is targeting 100% renewable energy coverage from day one, in line with Equinix's global 2030 renewable energy goal and the Asia-Pacific Data Centre Association's Sustainable Digital Infrastructure Accord.
Equinix also cited strong commercial momentum at KL1 since its launch, noting that more than two-thirds of its direct customers — based on internal Equinix data — operate across multiple metros, reflecting a broader trend where businesses are designing integrated, regional architectures spanning Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Singapore.
Equinix's Malaysia investments include approximately US$100 million in KL1 and US$40 million in JH1 in Johor, according to Cheam in previously reported statements, as well as US$201 million in its second Johor facility JH2, announced in November 2025.
Globally, the company operates over 280 data centres across 77 markets in 36 countries, serving more than 10,500 businesses. In Asia-Pacific, it operates 65 data centres across 10 markets including Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore.
