KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 24): Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the government has received a new proposal to complete the remaining construction of the beleaguered MEX II highway project.
The proposal was submitted by the receivers and managers of the project concessionaire, MEX II Sdn Bhd, in December 2025 to the Public-Private Partnership Unit (UKAS) under the Prime Minister’s Department.
“The government is currently reviewing the proposal before presenting it to the Cabinet for a decision,” Alexander said in a written parliamentary reply to Yeo Bee Yin (PH-Puchong) on Monday.
Yeo had inquired about the reasons for the delay in the MEX II highway project, which has been under receivership since 2022, and the measures being taken to ensure the project is completed as soon as possible.
MEX II, also known as the MEX extension, is a planned 16.8km, three-lane dual carriageway linking the MEX Putrajaya Interchange to the KLIA highway.
Construction began in 2016 and was initially targeted for completion in December 2019.
The project has been delayed mainly due to financial constraints faced by MEX II Sdn Bhd. To finance the extension, the company issued a sukuk but defaulted on principal and profit payments in 2021, resulting in its placement under receivership the following year.
MEX II Sdn Bhd is a subsidiary of Maju Holdings Sdn Bhd, which also owns Maju Expressway Sdn Bhd—operator of the original 26km Maju Expressway (MEX I) connecting Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya, and Cyberjaya.
It was reported in December last year that at least two companies, AFA Infrastructure and Development Sdn Bhd and Hitech Nexus (M) Sdn Bhd, have expressed interest in taking over both MEX I and MEX II from Maju Holdings.
Alexander previously said that MEX II is expected to cost about RM449 million to complete, with the final cost likely to be higher due to current price levels, repair costs, and other expenses.
