PETALING JAYA (April 14): The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) has urged all 156 local authorities (PBT [Pihak Berkuasa Tempatan]) nationwide to urgently strengthen energy planning and conservation measures at the local level, in line with the federal government's directive to address the worsening global energy crisis.

The directive was issued by KPKT through the Department of Local Government (JKT), with KPKT minister Nga Kor Ming emphasising that local authorities must take proactive and planned steps to optimise energy use across their buildings, facilities and daily operations — without compromising service delivery to the public.

"The Madani government always leads by example and ensures that the excellence of service delivery to the people cannot be compromised. Local authorities must ensure that daily operations and counter services continue to run smoothly and efficiently to meet the needs of the public," said Nga in a media release on Monday.

Six key measures have been recommended for immediate implementation across all PBTs:

  1. Setting the minimum air-conditioning temperature at 24°C in all local authority buildings and offices;

  2. Implementing a phased and selective work-from-home (WFH) policy beginning April 15 to reduce energy consumption, petrol usage and traffic congestion;

  3. Adopting daily energy-saving practices including switching off lights, computers and electrical equipment when not in use, and encouraging staff to wear climate-appropriate attire such as    batik or corporate shirts to reduce reliance on air-conditioning;

  4. Increasing the use of green technology including photovoltaic solar panels, energy-efficient LED lighting, and smart building management systems at local authority facilities;

  5. Conducting periodic energy audits and long-term planning to identify savings opportunities across buildings, street lighting, public markets, recreational parks and local infrastructure; and

  6. Promoting community awareness through local campaigns encouraging residents to practise energy conservation at home and in business premises.

KPKT will issue a formal circular through JKT to all local authorities to ensure uniform and effective implementation, with periodic monitoring to measure the impact of savings achieved.

"Energy savings at the local authority level are part of the government's holistic effort to strengthen the nation's resilience against global challenges. Every kilowatt saved contributes to a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come," Nga added.
