Set up in 1890 to provide not-for-profit transport services, the rail operator has racked up billions in liabilities through money-losing operations. Though the idea of generating income from SRT assets has been around for years, the plans are only now taking shape.

It also added that the rent-to-own programme will be expanded to cover houses priced up to RM500,000, with an option to purchase the property within five years of renting it. 

In terms of the total population, 70.5% or 23.01 million people had received at least one shot, including 60.6% or 19.78 million who were fully inoculated.

National Recovery Council (MPN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the government also looking at reopening of the country’s borders to vaccinated tourists, traders and entrepreneurs to enable them to come to Malaysia.

“This project spans 11 sq km. Located at the northeast end of Kuala Lumpur, this project will promote the use of public transportation and electric vehicles,” he said.

A commemorative plaque was unveiled to celebrate the momentous event.

The project implementation model will not involve any financial commitment from the government and will adopt the request for proposal approach.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, in a statement on Monday, said the undersea tunnel project was part of the three major roads and undersea tunnel projects in Penang.

“This is an example of how a green lung can be at risk if it is not gazetted as a green lung in the first place in the Kuala Lumpur City Plan 2020. We have made so many objections previously and called for the Federal Territories Minister to gazette Federal Hill as a green lung, and this is precisely what we were trying to prevent,” said SKL chairman Datuk M. Ali.

Sarawak logged the highest number of infections on Monday with 2,723, followed by Johor (1,226), Kelantan (983) and Selangor (979).
