KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 15): Khazanah Nasional Bhd has completed the restoration of Seri Negara after embarking on a 10-month conservation project. Seri Negara, which is located in Bukit Carcosa, Kuala Lumpur, will now operate as Galeri Seri Negara.
Khazanah managing director Datuk Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir, during a ceremony that commemorates the completion of Seri Negara’s conservation, said, “Seri Negara will house Galeri Seri Negara, which celebrates the nation’s journey towards independence and aims to educate the public about significant periods in Malaysia’s history from 1913 to the present day.”
Amirul added that the investment made towards restoring the buildings aligns with Khazanah’s strategy to boost Kuala Lumpur as a dynamic, economic and cultural hub.
“This investment is also a crucial effort to strengthen Kuala Lumpur as a dynamic, liveable hub for economic and cultural activities. Its objective is clear: to create long-term value, strengthen national identity and catalyse growth in the tourism, leisure and creative industries. Tourism has the potential to generate more than two times the multiplier effect in boosting the local economy."
In the same event, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that it will be inclusive for all.
“Beyond beautifying and conserving it, Seri Negara is meant to reflect that it belongs to the entire nation, encompassing its history, heritage, arts, culture and literature, in line with the Madani nation’s principle of inclusivity. This means that the space must be created here for schoolchildren, young people and ordinary citizens. For the first time in our history, we are witnessing Seri Negara being conserved with great care, where specialised skills and expertise are employed for the benefit of all Malaysians, across all segments of society.”

The renovation is part of the RM600 million fund that has been allocated by Khazanah to restore and preserve selected historical buildings in Kuala Lumpur.
Besides Seri Negara, the other buildings that Khazanah are tasked to restore and conserve are Carcosa, the six buildings within the Sultan Abdul Samad Buildings Complex as well as a pedestrian bridge that links Seri Negara and Carcosa to the Perdana Botanical Gardens Kuala Lumpur.
For the Sultan Abdul Samad Buildings Complex, it comprises Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad, Pejabat Pos Lama, the former Kuala Lumpur High Court, Panggung Bandaraya, the old FMS Survey Office and the National Textile Museum.
The Carcosa, Seri Negara and Sultan Abdul Samad Buildings Complex are owned by the Malaysian government and leased to Khazanah to operate and manage the buildings.
This conservation project is part of the Warisan KL initiative, a culture-based urban rejuvenation initiative that aims to revitalise Kuala Lumpur.
