GEORGE TOWN (March 17): The Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project has not experienced any delays as claimed, even though the contract bidding process for Package 2 has not yet been implemented.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said, however, the delay in the tender for Package 2, which involves rail systems, trains, electricity supply and signalling systems, has not affected the progress of work under Package 1.

"Works under Package 1 include the construction of basic structures including poles, tracks and stations which need to be completed first before the installation of the rail system and train operations can commence.

"Package 2, on the other hand, involves the installation of tracks, signalling systems, electricity supply and trains, all of which can only be implemented after the structural work under Package 1 is completed," he was commenting on a portal report claiming that there will be delays in the LRT project because the tender process for Package 2 has not yet been implemented.

In a press conference, he explained that in terms of project scheduling, the tender for Package 2 has not yet affected the progress of the project because the contractor for the package can only start work after the basic infrastructure is completed.

Meanwhile, Chow said that so far, 23,000 people have visited the exhibition during the public inspection session of the Mutiara Line LRT project, with some 8,000 official responses received from the public.

Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) is conducting a public inspection session to seek feedback on the railway scheme amendment for the Penang Mutiara Line LRT Project which connects the island and Seberang Perai.

The three-month public inspection, which began from Feb 24 to May 24, 2026, will provide the public with an opportunity to review and provide feedback on the alignment extension, station locations and related project details.

The Mutiara Line LRT, which began construction in 2025, is expected to be operational in December 2031 and will span approximately 29.67 kilometres with 20 stations and two provisional stations.

It includes the connection between the island and Seberang Perai, covering a six-kilometre route from Macallum Station to Penang Sentral, and is being developed as a cross-sea rail connection.
