KUALA LUMPUR: The government will ensure that all affordable homes planned, will not be built in non-strategic locations such as remote areas, said Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Lajim Ukin.

He said all factors, especially the availability of basic facilities like communication links, and water and electricity supply would be taken into consideration before such a housing project could be implemented in an area.

"Actually, before such houses are to be built by the state or federal government, a study must first be done on the location to ascertain whether it already has the basic facilities.

"We will not build such houses in remote areas as these will not be bought or rented by eligible buyers," he said in reply to questions from Senator Datin Paduka Nor Hayati Onn in the Dewan Negara today.

Nor Hayati wanted to know whether the government was aware that many low-cost houses had been built in less strategic areas, as well as the steps taken by the government to solve the problem of many unsold units in such areas.

Lajim said one of the steps taken to attract buyers for such homes was to have attractive and up-to-date designs for the houses.

"This is necessary as the government wants to remove the perception that low-cost homes or the people's housing projects are only meant for the poor."

Lajim said other considerations were beautiful landscapes and panoramic views for such housing projects and the provision of children's playgrounds.

He said 83,376 units of affordable homes were being built nationwide and out of this figure, 63,166 had been completed, 15,800 under construction and 4,410 in the planning stagem, but the construction is expected to start in July.-- Bernama
