The nearly decade-long wait by residents of Kampung Sungai Baru has finally come to an end, as the long-delayed redevelopment project in the area officially kicked off on Sunday. The project is expected to be completed within four years.

The government has decided not to adopt the en-bloc sale model in any urban renewal project to avoid forced relocation and gentrification, said PLANMalaysia deputy director general (development) Saidin Lateh.

The Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) is ready to retable the second reading of the Urban Renewal Bill (URB) 2025 at the Dewan Rakyat sitting next week.
