KUALA LUMPUR:  Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has defended the proposal to build a 100-storey tower in Kuala Lumpur, costing RM5 billion, saying it was not a waste but an opportunity to generate the economy and create an icon for a developed and modern Malaysia. The prime minister said the construction of the tower would benefit many sectors.

"There are many contract works which we can give out to spur economic activities. The area can also become a centre of attraction and a business centre. This is not a waste but something that will bring benefit," said the prime minister, adding that the project was proposed by Permodalan Nasional Bhd.

"I did not ask PNB to undertake the project. It is something which the PNB management wants to see implemented," he told reporters after giving a closed-door briefing to Umno leaders in conjunction with the 2010 Umno General Assembly which began on Tuesday Oct 19.

Tabling the 2011 Budget on Friday, Najib said a new landmark would be built, to be named Warisan Merdeka, scheduled for completion in 2020. He said former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was criticised when, during his administration, he decided to build the Penang Bridge but now the people has accepted it as a good project and even wanted a second one.
Mahathir was also criticised for the construction of the Petronas Twin Towers, he said.

Najib said the new tower would be the tallest in Malaysia and would also preserve the Merdeka Stadium and National Stadium as the country's heritage. -- Bernama
