KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 27): FIABCI-Malaysia has pledged full support for the federal government’s Urban Renewal Bill 2025 while urging the authorities to provide clear regulations, implementation guidelines and approved timelines to ensure effective execution.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, the organisation said it stands ready to work closely with government agencies and industry stakeholders to realise the initiative’s objectives.

“The Urban Renewal Act establishes a legal framework for redeveloping run-down buildings, outdated infrastructure and neglected neighbourhoods, with the aim of revitalising urban areas,” said FIABCI-Malaysia president Dr Yu Kee Su in the statement.

He added that the Act is expected to promote sustainable growth, enhance quality of life, and transform urban centres into models of shared prosperity and resilience.

Yu noted that the proposed legislation aligns with FIABCI-Malaysia’s long-standing advocacy for sustainable urban development and inclusive growth.

He said urban renewal would not only upgrade infrastructure and improve safety, but also strengthen city centre competitiveness, foster commercial opportunities and support local community needs.

FIABCI-Malaysia also stressed that public-private partnerships should be actively encouraged to enable financially viable and impactful projects.

Yu further emphasised that urban regeneration must uplift rather than displace communities, with good governance to protect the rights and relocation needs of affected residents.

He recommended transparency mechanisms such as measurable performance indicators and consistent progress reporting to build trust and public support.

With the revised Bill expected to be tabled in Parliament next month, Yu said stakeholders in the real estate, construction and related sectors should begin preparing to engage.

He added that FIABCI-Malaysia remains committed to contributing expertise to ensure the Urban Renewal Act becomes a transformative milestone for Malaysia’s urban resilience.
