PETALING JAYA (March 13): SJK (C) Cheah Fah has broken ground on the second phase of its expansion, marking another milestone in Johor’s fast-growing southern corridor and underscoring Sunway Property’s long-term commitment to education infrastructure.
The primary school, which opened in 2022 with RM18 million contributed by Sunway Bhd and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, was the first of 10 Chinese national-type schools approved under the Johor state government's allocation. Enrolment has since grown to more than 820 students in under four years, pushing facilities close to their 1,000-pupil capacity.
“As Sunway City Iskandar Puteri matures into a family-oriented township, access to quality education becomes fundamental,” said Gerard Soosay, CEO of Sunway City Iskandar Puteri.
“Education remains the most powerful pathway out of poverty and the strongest foundation for social mobility. This expansion ensures public schooling capacity grows in tandem with population growth,” he added.
The project will add 12 classrooms, raising the school’s total capacity to 1,500 students. The canteen will also be expanded to seat the entire student body at once.

The design anticipates future policy shifts, including the government’s move to allow six-year-olds into Standard One.
Sunway has invested RM23 million in the school to date, including RM5 million pledged following a 2025 fundraising dinner that raised RM1 million from more than 900 donors.
The expansion comes amid renewed momentum in Johor, driven by industrial investment, cross-border activity and rising residential demand.
Construction will proceed without disrupting classes, with completion targeted by the end of the year.
Once completed, the enlarged campus will reinforce Sunway City Iskandar Puteri’s positioning as a family-focused, education-led township, reflecting Sunway’s belief that investing in national-type education is as integral to its vision as township development.
SJK (C) Cheah Fah is one of eight schools nationwide adopted by Sunway and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, Malaysia’s largest education-focused social enterprise.
To date, Sunway and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation have contributed more than RM62 million towards the development of these schools. The foundation has also awarded over RM967 million in scholarships and grants to thousands of deserving students nationwide.
