PETALING JAYA (June 26): S P Setia Bhd successfully renewed the Green Building Index (GBI) Platinum certification for its corporate headquarters in Setia Alam, Shah Alam, achieving a score of 94 out of 100 points under the Non-Residential New Construction (NRNC) category.

The renewal keeps Setia HQ within an exceptionally small cohort of high-performing buildings in Malaysia. Of the 800 buildings that have received GBI certification to date, only 32 — representing 4% of the total — carry the Platinum designation, which is the highest tier available under the rating system.

The GBI is Malaysia's principal industry-recognised green rating tool for buildings, designed to encourage and measure sustainability in the built environment.

Assessments under the NRNC category evaluate commercial and institutional structures across criteria including energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, water conservation, site planning and materials management, among others. A score of 94 points places Setia HQ firmly at the upper end of that scale.

The significance of this renewal lies not in initial certification — which any developer might pursue at launch to bolster a project's marketability — but in the sustained operational performance it reflects.

Green building ratings can deteriorate over time if a structure is not actively managed to maintain its environmental standards. Retaining a Platinum score signals that the building continues to perform as designed, rather than simply having met the benchmark at a single point in time.

"The renewal of Setia HQ's GBI Platinum certification is a meaningful validation of the building's sustained environmental performance and the standards we continue to uphold in managing our corporate headquarters," president and CEO of S P Setia Datuk Zaini Yusoff said.

"Being among only 32 GBI Platinum-certified buildings in Malaysia this year reinforces the importance of designing and operating buildings with energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, water management and long-term sustainability in mind," Zaini added.

He also connected the headquarters' rating to the group's wider development philosophy. "For Setia, this recognition reflects our broader commitment to embedding practical and measurable sustainability considerations across the spaces we build, manage and occupy," he said.

“The building utilises recycled and regionally sourced materials, as well as effective construction waste management practices. Smart resource management extends to water management approaches such as rainwater harvesting, efficient irrigation, water-saving fittings, leak detection and water monitoring systems,” stated S P Setia via a media release.

“In terms of site planning, Setia HQ’s extensive landscaping features native and adaptive plant species, creating an ecologically responsive environment within the development. Its provision of open spaces, access to public transportation and support for green and electric vehicles further strengthen its sustainability credentials,” it added.

Greenbuildingindex Sdn Bhd administers the Green Building Index (GBI), Malaysia’s industry-recognised green rating tool for buildings and townships. Incorporated in 2009 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) and the Association of Consulting Engineers Malaysia (ACEM), the organisation oversees GBI accreditation, certification processes, and related training to promote sustainable design, construction and operation within Malaysia’s built environment.
