PETALING JAYA (Sept 18): Sunway Healthcare Group (SHG) has broken ground on its planned RM800 million Sunway Medical Centre Iskandar Puteri, its first hospital in southern Malaysia.
In a statement on Friday (Sept 18), SHG said the multi-specialty tertiary hospital, located within Sunway City Iskandar Puteri in Johor, is targeted for completion in 2030 and is expected to have more than 400 beds.
The hospital is expected to employ more than 1,400 healthcare professionals. Its facilities will include more than 45 intensive care beds, over 130 ambulatory care beds, more than 80 consultation suites, 10 operating theatres and two catheterisation laboratories.
SHG said the hospital will provide specialist services in cardiovascular care, oncology, neuroscience, gastroenterology and hepatology, orthopaedics, and women’s and children’s health.
It will also include an integrated Cancer and Nuclear Medicine Centre offering radiotherapy and nuclear medicine services.
Located near the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone and the upcoming Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System Link, the hospital is intended to serve Johor’s growing population, communities across southern Malaysia and international patients from Indonesia and Singapore.
Johor investment, trade, consumer affairs and human resources committee chairman Lee Ting Han said the development reflected continued investor confidence in Johor and complemented the state government’s efforts to strengthen its healthcare ecosystem.
“In addition to expanding access to quality specialist care, I trust that this project will create skilled employment opportunities and contribute to the continued growth of Iskandar Puteri and the wider Johor economy,” he said.
Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah said quality healthcare was essential to sustaining Johor’s development.
“Businesses choose to invest where people can build secure and fulfilling lives, and families place their trust in places where quality medical care is within reach,” he said.
SHG president Datuk Lau Beng Long said the hospital would serve as the healthcare anchor of Sunway City Iskandar Puteri.
The 2,000-acre integrated township comprises education, hospitality, entertainment, retail, commercial and residential components. It is expected to serve more than 250,000 residents upon full completion, according to SHG.
Sunway Medical Centre Iskandar Puteri is one of three greenfield hospitals planned by SHG, alongside tertiary hospitals in Seremban Sentral and Putrajaya.
The group also plans to establish the Sunway Fertility Centre at Sunway Citrine, targeted for completion in 2027, and the Sunway Ambulatory Care Centre near the RTS Link, targeted for completion in 2028. It is also exploring potential elder-care facilities.
Following the listing of Sunway Healthcare Holdings Bhd on Bursa Malaysia’s Main Market on March 18, SHG aims to operate eight hospitals with a combined capacity of more than 3,400 beds across Malaysia by 2032.
SHG said Sunway Medical Centre Velocity, Sunway Medical Centre Penang and Sunway Medical Centre Damansara recorded their first EBITDA-positive months within 12, three and nine months of opening respectively.
The group is targeting its future greenfield hospitals to record their first EBITDA-positive month within 12 to 18 months of opening.
For 2QFY2026, SHG’s revenue rose 30% year-on-year to RM672.9 million, while profit attributable to owners increased 89% to RM78.2 million.
The combined contribution of Sunway Medical Centre Damansara and Sunway Medical Centre Ipoh to group revenue rose to 11% from 5% a year earlier.
