PETALING JAYA (Feb 23): Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC) has appointed Studio Egret West as master planner, urban designer and landscape architect to advance the remaining approximately 50% of its 42-acre riverside neighbourhood in Central London.

The appointment covers the final 16 acres of the site, which has outline planning permission for up to 3.2 million sq ft of residential, commercial, cultural and leisure space.

Studio Egret West will evolve the original masterplan conceived over 15 years ago by the late architect Rafael Viñoly, with the updated plans intended to reflect shifts in lifestyle expectations, leisure patterns and workspace needs.

With roughly half of the regeneration now complete, the remaining phases are set to finalise the mixed-use riverside district centred around the Grade II listed Battersea Power Station.

Regeneration halfway complete

Since opening to the public in 2022 following an eight-year restoration, the landmark has welcomed more than 40 million visitors. To date, the broader redevelopment has delivered over 2,200 homes and 800,000 sq ft of office space alongside the new Zone 1 Battersea Power Station Underground station.

The district also features more than 150 retail, dining and leisure outlets. The project was acquired by its Malaysian shareholders in 2012 after the site had stood derelict for nearly three decades.

Tan Sri Shahril Ridza Ridzuan, chairman of Battersea Project Holding Company, said the appointment comes at a time when cities are adapting to changing patterns of living and working.

Critical time to reflect and fine-tune plans

“Fourteen years later, now is a critical time to reflect on the original plans and fine-tune them to better support how people live, work and spend their leisure time in the city,” he said via a media release today, adding that the shareholders remain committed to London as a global investment destination.

Sam Cotton, interim CEO of BPSDC, described the move as “pressing the start button” on the delivery programme for the final phases.

The remaining development will connect to the new Nine Elms Park and include future phases such as Gehry-designed buildings completing Electric Boulevard.

Separately, Battersea Power Station and Wandsworth Council have announced plans to deliver around 200 new council homes under the Homes for Wandsworth programme, subject to planning and funding approvals.

The 42-acre regeneration site is owned by a consortium of Malaysian shareholders comprising S P Setia Bhd, Sime Darby Property Bhd and Employees Provident Fund. In 2019, Permodalan Nasional Bhd and the Employees Provident Fund became long-term commercial asset holders of Battersea Power Station.
