KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 3): Scanfil plc, Europe’s largest listed electronics manufacturer, has invested RM15.8 million to expand and modernise its SRX Global (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd facility in Johor Bahru, according to the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida).
In a statement on Wednesday, Mida said that the upgrade is expected to increase Scanfil’s production capacity by nearly 50% and supports the group’s broader Asia-Pacific operations, which also include facilities in Melbourne, Australia. Prior to the expansion, the Johor Bahru plant ran four automated surface mount technology (SMT lines) with 170 employees.
Scanfil group chief executive officer (CEO) Christophe Sut said the expansion reflects Malaysia’s “positive and business-friendly” environment, which supports the company’s long-term commitment to developing its operations in Johor’s capital city.
“We see great opportunities, especially driven by customers in industrial, and medical technology and life sciences,” Sut said.
The upgraded facility site features an expanded production area, one-stop integrated electronics manufacturing, and the potential to increase its workforce beyond the current 170 employees.
Mida CEO Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid described the investment as a meaningful step in advancing the country’s high-value manufacturing sector.
“This investment will attract advanced technologies, create skilled employment opportunities, and strengthen innovation and sustainability across the electronics supply chain,” Sikh Shamsul said.
He added that the move supports the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030 and the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS), which aim to deepen Malaysia’s capabilities in electronics and semiconductors while building long-term supply chain resilience.
Scanfil, headquartered in Finland, reported revenue of €780 million (RM3.8 billion) in 2024. The group operates 11 production facilities across four continents and has served some of its global customers for more than four decades.
